Senator Risa Hontiveros criticized President Duterte for declaring Martial Law in Mindanao. She pointed out that the declaration might be a cover up for the failure of the Philippine government to prevent the attacks in the first place.
“I hope that the declaration of martial law in the south is not being used as a cover up the government’s alleged failure of intelligence in combating terrorism,” Hontiveros said.
The senator stated that as early as 2016, President Duterte has already disclosed receiving threats from the Maute Group, threatening to burn Marawi City if the AFP would not stop its military offensives.
Senator Hontiveros said she is looking forward to reading Duterte’s report to the Congress to justify this declaration.
She stated her concern for the civilians in the affected areas of the attacks and added that the declaration of Martial Law might even “contribute to the environment of fear and violence” in Mindanao.
